Throughout Europe there are numerous public natural swimming pools that provide people with the opportunity to bathe, swim and play in natural water. At the same time careful planning and design retains the beauty of the area as this ensures a harmonious relationship between landform, water and trees - the three major elements of a beautiful landscape.
Even in winter when the water is frozen they offer recreational opportunities for ice skating, sledging, etc.
Public pools can be seen at hotels, schools, public lidos and country parks and some are even nature reserves offering considerable educational benefits as well as providing habitats for endangered species.
There is no doubt that swimming provides considerable health benefits, especially in chemical free water, as well as all the social relationships and recreational opportunities that can accrue.
England has a wonderful opportunity, especially with hosting the Olympic Games in 2012, to have natural swimming pools made available for the public to use and enjoy.
