DESIGNER Michael Littlewood is a natural landscape architect and environmental planner with extensive national and international experience of successfully designing and implementing sustainable land use projects. His mission has been the introduction of ecological design and planning into the mainstream and is founded on years of practice in a wide variety of situations, landscapes, climates and uses of land for public and private amenities on scales ranging from the residential garden to a village or town.

His designs have incorporated his specialisms of eco-building, bio-engineering, renewable energy systems, water harvesting, waste treatments, organic food production, natural swimming pools, wildlife and nature conservation.

In his work Michael has been guided by a belief in the necessity and value of working in harmony with nature, to a philosophy and design approach rooted in the permaculture ethics of integrating earth care with people care to the increased benefit of both. He sees his concepts as a dramatic and conspicuous example of the value of ecological design, where separating and combining functions and uses makes the most of both worlds, the natural and the artificial while at the same time creating beauty.

AUTHOR Michael is also an author and writer. He has written many articles for a wide range of magazines all over the world on all his specialist subjects.

His first book Landscape Detailing was published in the mid 1980’s and since then he has produced five different volumes dealing with surfaces, enclosures, structures, water and trees. He has also written a Guide for school grounds, a Handbook for organic gardeners, and in addition produced booklets, calendars and posters for specific aspects of gardening, such as Companion Planting and Gardening by the Moon.

A series of booklets covering his concepts of the Sustainable Village, Farm, School and Residence have been produced to promote living in harmony with nature by communities and individuals. His three books on Natural Swimming Pools have also received high acclaim.
