Natural Swimming Pools
As part of my holistic design philosophy, I introduced the concept of swimming in natural chemical-free water to the UK, after visits to Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Natural pools are a joy to see and pure bliss to swim in. In addition they provide considerable health benefits.
A natural swimming pool is a combination of a swimming pool and a natural pond. It comprises a swimming zone and a regeneration zone, which are separated by a barrier below the water surface. The regeneration zone contains aquatic plants which keep the water clean through biological processes, rendering chemicals unnecessary. The result is a swimming pool that is also an inspirational aquatic garden.
I have studied the various systems undertaken by the main companies in Europe for natural swimming pools in a wide range of situations. This enables me to design projects that are functional, cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing and which are individually tailored to your site and requirements. Having an overall design prepared for your pool and its immediate surroundings will ensure that it becomes an integral and beautiful part of your garden or landscape at all times of the year.
My design service will provide you with all the necessary drawings for the construction of your natural swimming pool, which can be used for obtaining cost estimates from specialist contractors or to enable you to undertake the work yourself.
Conventional Pool Conversion
If you already have a conventional swimming pool, this can be converted to the natural system, and my design and planning service will work out the best and most cost-effective way of doing so.
Your natural swimming pool will:
- Allow you and your family to swim in chemical-free water
- Create a beautiful feature in your garden all year round
- Provide a much-needed habitat for a wide range of wildlife species
- Save on water and reduce energy costs
- Help the environment by avoiding the use of chemicals
- Add value to your home
Throughout Europe there are numerous public natural swimming pools which provide people with the opportunity to bathe, swim and play in natural water. Swimming provides considerable health benefits, as well as the opportunity for social interaction and relaxation, and these are all enhanced by the very special qualities of a natural pool. A natural swimming pool is a wonderful amenity for any community, business or organisation.
The careful planning and design of natural pools retains the beauty of the area as it ensures a harmonious relationship between landform, water and trees – the three major elements of a beautiful landscape. Having an overall design prepared for your pool and its surroundings will ensure that it becomes a wonderful landscape amenity as well as a joy for people to use.
Advocates of the natural swimming pool system are now keen to share its benefits with local authorities and the leisure industry. A booklet (See Eco-Publications) explains how the natural system can be utilised to create inspirational public pools which combine a natural, healthy swimming environment with a recreational facility which can be enjoyed all year round as a place for walking, relaxing and watching wildlife.
It explains how the natural system can be adapted to pools intended for a large number of users, and how existing outdoor swimming pools and lidos can be converted to the natural system. It concludes with a range of case studies profiling inspirational examples of successful public natural swimming pools in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
